Kennedy Krieger Institute is a champion in the Special Olympics Maryland community. Their contributions to equal access to health, fitness, or wellness for people with intellectual disabilities are significant and impactful. In addition to their employees participating in the MSP Polar Bear Plunge every year, Kennedy Krieger partners with SOMD on many health initiatives including health screenings for student-athletes and young athletes. Our partnership is helping identify medical practitioners who can provide healthcare services and referrals to our athletes!

My joining the Special Olympics Maryland Board in 2021 served as a catalyst for a transformative partnership between Kennedy Krieger Institute and Special Olympics Maryland (SOMD), two organizations whose mission, values, and vision align significantly. It is so gratifying to know that we are moving the needle through our collaboration which impacts the lives of individuals with disabilities across multiple touch points of our respective organizations. These touch points include SOMD’s Inclusive Health program, as well as our efforts related to enhancing neurodiversity in the workplace (e.g. Project SEARCH), and our students in Kennedy Krieger School Programs who participate in Adapted Physical Education and compete in SOMD events like the City Games in the spring. We’re looking forward to another productive year ahead, and many more, where we continue to enhance and grow our collaborative efforts.
