Robey Torch Run HOF
Congratulations to the 2010 Inductees!
In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Law Enforcement Torch Run in Maryland, Special Olympics Maryland announces the creation of the Chief James N. Robey Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame for Special Olympics Maryland. The Hall of Fame honors outstanding contributions to the Maryland Torch Run, recognizing those who have gone above and beyond in their service to the athletes and the Special Olympics movement.
We are proud to present the 2010 inductees:
Senator James Robey, Founder: As one of the founders of the Maryland Torch Run, Senator Robey is being recognized for his incredible legacy of service to the athletes of Special Olympics Maryland. His work 25 years ago laid the foundation for what has become the most successful Torch Run program in the world today. Not only is the Hall of Fame named after him, but Senator Robey officially became the first inductee during a special ceremony on Friday, June 11.
Colonel Douglas Holland, MD Torch Run Chairman: As both a career law enforcement officer and the proud parent of beautiful Desiree, Chief Holland epitomizes the spirit of service that this Hall of Fame celebrates. He blazed a trail many years ago for those with intellectual disabilities, fighting for dignity, respect and acceptance for all. Fortunately for us, he has lent that same passion and energy to the Maryland Torch Run, and the exponential success of this movement under his leadership truly speaks for itself.
Captain John Newnan, MD Torch Run Director: Captain Newnan is being honored for his exceptional dedication to the Special Olympics movement, both here in Maryland and across the globe. His energy and passion for Special Olympics is unrivaled and his commitment to making the world a better place for the athletes knows no bounds – which is clearly evidenced by his successful tenure as Torch Run Director in Maryland, and his work on the International Torch Run Council.
Congratulations to all three recipients of the Hall of Fame award, and thank you for lending us your time and your talents as we work together to make this world a better place for all persons with intellectual disabilities.
